Who is eligible for the German green card?

Computer specialists with university and polytechnic qualifications, e.g. Bachelor's or Master's Degrees, will be allowed to work in Germany for a limited period of time. This arrangement will apply to all job applicants from non-EU countries. There will be no limitation to persons from any specific countries.

On the 2nd of March 2000 the Federal Employment Agency created an Internet hotline for the advertisement of jobs (under "Personalbedarf und Ausbildungsplätze" at www.arbeitsamt.de). The German government calls upon interested companies to post their job offers on the Internet or to report them directly to the responsible employment offices. These web sites do charge money to the employees(candidates). The appropriate amount would be charged to the employer upon successful placement with them in Germany.

For how many years is the Green Card valid?

The period of employment for top-level computer specialists from abroad is to be limited to three years with the possibility of getting an extension for up to two more years, i.e. for a maximum total of up to five years. The Green Card is valid for a period of five years.

What elements should be included in a service contract to ensure that it is suitable for a work permit application?

A provision of service contract should include the following elements:

  • The day to day line management of the consultants remains with the service provider
  • It should include warranted deliverables.
  • It should cover the entire period for which the permit is requested.
  • It should be signed by both parties and, ideally, be on the client's headed paper.

Can Green card holders bring their families with them to Germany?

German law entitles holders (as long as all the other pertinent provisions of law governing foreign residents have been complied with) to bring their families to Germany right away.

Persons wanting to work in Germany should apply to the "Zentralstelle für Arbeitsvermittlung" (ZAV) in Bonn. It can be reached by e-mail at the following address: "Bonn-ZAV.IT-Experts@arbeitsamt.de". Mail in your request. ZAV will take it from there. ZAV will be responsible, for instance, for checking applicants' qualifications on the basis of certificates presented and, if necessary, their translations.
