What is Metro Ethernet?

We prefer to speak in terms of Carrier Ethernet, which is both a carrier-managed business service and an infrastructure than can be used to carry converged voice, video and data traffic to residential and business customers within a metropolitan area.

What are the Advantages of Metro Ethernet?

Carrier Ethernet not only provides far greater bandwidth than legacy networks, it also makes more efficient use of that bandwidth. The simplistic nature of Carrier Ethernet cuts down on network complexity, which helps reduce Service Providers' operating expenses. From a CapEx perspective, Ethernet routers are also less expensive to purchase than legacy switches or IP routers.

According to market research firm, worldwide metro Ethernet equipment revenue is projected to grow 157% to $7.7 billion in 2007.What are the Key drivers for this impressive growth?

Today's networks are ill-equipped to meet the growing demand for such bandwidth-intensive applications such as HDTV, IPTV, online gaming and distance learning. At the same time, increased competition means that service providers need to have a cost-effective network to protect or grow margins. Ethernet delivers the rich, flexible broadband service providers need to support tomorrow's services while simultaneously reducing their operating expenses.

What are the problems that the Metro Ethernet industry was facing in its early days and today?

Because it was designed for the campus environment, Ethernet lacked the scalability, reliability and Quality of Service (QoS) necessary for the early carrier deployments of the 1990s. That all changed in 2000 when Riverstone introduced the first MPLS-based Ethernet router, which gave Ethernet the carrier-grade attributes it lacked. More advanced MPLS-Ethernet based technologies such as VPLS and HVPLS have resulted in Ethernet's use as the infrastructure for some of the world's largest Triple Play service deployments. The next challenge is to develop the standards required to allow Ethernet services across carriers by interconnecting each carrier's VPLS domains. This can be accomplished by extending VPLS between them or using a BGP VPN to interconnect networks. Riverstone's chief scientist and father of the VPLS standard, Marc Lasserre, is actively involved in these efforts.

Ethernet has always been thought of as a LAN technology. Why is it now suitable for the metro area?

The Ethernet we all know from the office has been completely re-engineered for the carrier market. Hardware is now fully redundant and, in many cases, ETSI-compliant for carrier-grade reliability. The use of MPLS furthers that carrier-grade reliability at the network level and also delivers the necessary scalability and QoS. Now, taking another step forward, Riverstone is employing a modular and distributed operating system on its Riverstone 15000 family of Ethernet routers to provide exceptional software reliability. While IP routers have employed this software model for some time, this is a first for Ethernet routers.

What are the Enterprise benefits enabled by Metro Ethernet?

Enterprises today are striving to improve productivity. Ethernet connections across the WAN give them access to higher bandwidth, which can be used for the faster transfer of large files, video conferencing, and remote training. These are among the many benefits of the higher bandwidth. These benefits improve communication between the different organizations and allow geographically dispersed teams to collaborate on large projects. Ethernet equipment is also less expensive than traditional WAN routers. Operationally, the enterprise can now use one technology on the LAN and the WAN making training, provisioning, maintenance and troubleshooting easier across the entire network. This also reduces operational costs.

What are the Benefits to the End-User?

For enterprise end-users, the primary benefit is the greater bandwidth so they can share information more quickly and easily. For residential end-users, the main benefit is having more services available to them. For example, Ethernet enables carriers to provide residential customers with a pay-per-view service so that they may watch the shows or movies they want to see at a time that is convenient for them. It also allows content in High Definition (HDTV), thus providing a higher quality picture. In addition, it allows new content to be added to the service, like education and training. School children may be able to get extra training through programs delivered over the residential Ethernet connection. All of this is enabled by the higher bandwidth and QoS characteristics of carrier Ethernet.

What are the aspects that are most important for successful deployment of Metro-Ethernet?

A successful deployment of Ethernet in a telecom carrier's network requires planning for scalability, reliability, QoS and operations. These are the strengths of a carrier Ethernet solution. Scalability is critical because more and more services are going to shift to the Ethernet; the network should act as a platform that is flexible and can accomodate more users and new services over time. Reliability is important as critical services like IP telephony, video conferencing or data backups will take place over the network and quick recovery from any network failure is important. QoS is what assures customers that their premium and real-time services get priority over routine traffic. Operations is a recurring cost; a successful deployment includes a well architected management system that can be used to understand network performance at any time and to solve any issues in the network, quickly.

What have you been better at than your competitors?

Experience is essential in a carrier network and no one has more experience in real world carrier metro Ethernet deployments than Riverstone. That experience, in turn, is incorporated into our products resulting in Riverstone being rated #1 in IP/MPLS service delivery technology by the industry analyst firm Heavy Reading in 2004.

What do you envision the company looking like three to five years from today?

I'm not a soothsayer. All I know is that we've got the best technology, the best talent, strong partnerships and a wealth of carrier deployment experience.
